Universal vehicle communication center  –  router LTE/Wi-Fi/V2X/ethernet - unit UCU  5.0x  is a product of the Herman company. It is a universal vehicle communication unit that can be HW “configured” by the customer i.e. it is possible to define the chosen functions that are to be added to the unit. It is a universal vehicle communication center (router) i.e. an independent solution suitable for any communication system in a vehicle. This unit also provides authorization based access (firewall) to prevent outside attacks, it serves as a GNSS (GPS, Glonas, Galileo) server and records what is happening in the vehicle. Independent “communication” applications can be run on this unit that will take care of vehicle data collection, public transportation vehicle preference, public wifi for passengers etc..

The unit can also contains communication functions as per V2X, routers and vibration sensors, gyroscope, compass etc.

Communication vehicle unit (router) integrates:

  1. GNSS module (GPS, Glonass or Galileo position) – can be used as a GPS router for components in a vehicle while simultaneously being able to attach vehicle position information to messages sent to the central servers,
  2. up to 2x LTE/UMTS/GSM modules for communication in two independent GSM networks (e.g. APN of a transportation company and WiFi for passengers) – the unit can have 1-2 SIM cards depending on the required unit type,
  3. WiFi module IEEE 802.11 a/c, providing uploads in depots WiFi for passengers with the latest standard. It provides connection for more than 50 WiFi users and up to 8 SSID networks can be used.  The communication speed of the connection is 860/430 Mbit/s.
  4. V2X module, providing vehicle preference on intersections as per the V2X standard (C2X) – ITS-G5 using either one-way or two-way vehicle-controller communication. Simultaneously it can perform other actions – e.g. preventing tram collisions.
  5. Sensor circuits (gyroscope and accelerometer) suitable for future use, e.g. scanning vibrations or vehicle acceleration. They are also suitable for possible future V2X function extensions.
  6. Router function – 1x ETH interface 1 Gbit/s (for fast communication with PP) and 1x ETH interface 100 Mbit/s (for connecting to the vehicle computer network of the front tram of coupled trams)

Basic router parameters (communication units UCU 5.0x)

The unit has the following basic parameters:

  • Operation system:   Linux (Debian), RTOS for processor system in real time
  • Processor:                  2 cores 1 GHz, RAM 1 GB, SD – 8GB (min.)
  • Ethernet outputs:   2x separated ethernet networks – e.g. Information system network and camera system network, out of this 1x Gbit/s and 1x 100 Mbit/s
  • Wifi output:            independent separated wifi network communicating as per IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (8 independent SSID) with communication ability up to 860/430 Mbit/s
  • Possibility of starting a chosen application – e.g. reading actions on outputs, on IBIS, RS 485, CAN busbar, from tachograph,  etc.
  • Possibility of remote surveillance using a sever provided by us, or can be integrated into the SPRINTER  application
  • The unit can also be equipped with a V2X communication module as per the ETSI G5 standards - more here
  • Power supply:               an independent connector or PoE type B + 24V or independent / consumption 15W

When using other interfaces the application has to be equipped with new functions connected with using these interfaces. Because of possible high LTE transfer capacity workload the QoS control is implemented with the following priority order:

  1. Dispatching information – position, vehicle states, messages on LCD displays
  2. Vehicle camera picture (if they are connected to the vehicle network), if required by the dispatcher
  3. Internet for passengers
